Computer Programming

A sneak peek behind the sceen on the screen

Computer Programming/Advanced Computer Programming

These courses are currently works in progress. As I embark on the journey of introducing students to coding every year, I find that I tend to take a slightly different path each time. There is such a wide variety of options available to chose from when it comes to learning to code and applying those skills to the development of practical computer applications. Over the past several years my students have had the opportunity to interact with C++, Python, and Java.

In the process of learning to work within the structures of these programs, they also develop a variety of problem solving and critical thinking skills that are transferable to a variety of their other coursework. There is also a focus on the development of an analytical and systemic thought process when it comes to evaluating challenges and projects that the students are presented with. The selection of the programming language may vary in future implementations, but the practical skills gained in the process of learning to code are shared across all platforms.

In the 2014-2015 school year, we are not running the Advanced Programming course. Despite this, I have a student that has requested an Independant Study in order to continue his coding experience. To accomodate this students needs, I am attempting to employ the use of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) offereed by University of Reading. I will be asking the student to complete this MOOC and blog about his experiences weekly. At the completion of the MOOC, the student will develop a personal project to demonstrate and build upon the skills developed in the MOOC.

The MOOC is available here - Futurelearn MOOC

The students blog can be found here - MOOC Escapades

Any additional information will be added as it becomes available and is proven relevant.
