Sikorsky STEM Challenge

Providing students with real world engineering experineces

Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics

This anual event sponsored by Sikorsky Innovations and supported by Connecticut Corsair and Connecticut Innovations is an opportunity for students in Connecticut high schools to participate in real world engineering activities. Ten schools from around the state participated in a variety of tasks focused on proble solving, teamwork, planning, communication, and presentation skills.

The challenge for the 2014-2015 event focused on the modification and use of a Corsair airplane to help address a drought situation in Texas. The students had to research both the Corsair and the situation they were getting into in order to develop a viable solution. The students worked to develop a project plan to outline their activities and mission objectives, analyzed multiple design solutions, and developed free body diagrams to justfiy the viability of their design. This was done with the support of a mentor from Sikorsky who helped to guide our group through our first time participating in the challenge.

The students had a great experience and produced a sizable body of work. With this experience under our belts, I am confident that we will be able to improve our performance in the upcomming 2015-2016 challenge season.
